A Darkness Machine does what it promises — it produces darkness. If you leave it on a green lawn to do it's job it will kill every living plant beneath it and leave a cloud shaped patch of naked soil imprinted on the ground like a sun print. Life stopped and naked skin. The darkness produced by a Darkness Machine is the kind of darkness that attracts us and scares us at the same time — somewhere between radical openness and no change whatsoever (sex and death). They take us to a place on the borderline between submission and perdition, where the system of the visible and understandable no longer rules.

For the exhibition at die raum the Darkness Machines are dormant and nicely folded. Two guards — one on the street outside and the other one inside the space of die raum — are watching over the Darkness Machines and making sure that they stay dormant.

To even get started to write this text I had to trick myself: How could I write about something which in it's core is unrepresentable? The trick was to think of the text as a woodcut or a lino cut — a graphic image in only black and white. Just like text is often black letters on white paper. Try to imagine the kind of information you get from a woodcut and then read this text through that. It is not between the black and the white that sense is made. It happens somewhere else — I am not sure where.

Saturday August 20, Henriette Heise will press pause on the four Darkness Machines that is Henriettes contribution to the big scale project called Lovealley - initiated and run by the visual artist Marianne Jørgensen. The Darkness Machines have been working for two years now - lying on the ground on Mariannes field. Lovealley will close down (with a huge party) August 20 and the Darkness Machines will enter a new state: Darkness Marchines - dormant.

In this book you will find twenty-two letters written by people who know Henriette Heise and her work as a visual artist. Friends, artists, art historians, musicians and poets, have written specifically for this book. Henriette asked these people to write a letter taking its point of departure in her work. Names are left out to protect the private sphere and intimacy of the correspondence. There are also four letters written by Henriette herself - letters originally written for the blog bedsteven.blogspot.com.

Henriette Heise is a visual artist working with imagination and representation, and therefore believes that publishing twenty-six letters and nine linocuts is the most precise way to represent her work in a book.

The installation DREAMING SOFTENS YOU AND MAKES YOU UNFIT FOR DAILY WORK by HENRIETTE HEISE is on show at the MOMENTAN window gallery every morning 7.45am to 8.15am and every evening 4pm to 10pm. The show is on from January 12th - 28th 2009.

Reception Saturday January 17th from 5pm to 6pm in the street outside MOMENTAN at Guldbergsgade 41, Copenhagen.

The installation consists of two large collages made of fabric from used duvet covers. There is furthermore a light system. The collages of fabric work as curtains in the windows of MOMENTAN. The light streams through them and into the street with a sleep like rhythm.

Each morning at 7.57am Henriette Heise walks half asleep down Guldbergsgade passing the windows of MOMENTAN. She walks with her daughter Solvej, who shall meet at 8am at the local school nearby. The point of departure for Henriette Heise's exhibition at MOMENTAN is exactly this situation.

Four curtains made with this sentence in mind: "Jag gillar teatral arkitektur som bygger på drömmar om förändring."

Then one day, while working on the curtains and checking facebook simultaneously, a friend from facebook linked to a web magazine; trikster.net. I followed the link and found an article by Katarina Bonnevier about the author Selma Lagerlöff and her house - that is a long and interesting story, so go and read it yourself if you are interested...
